Adam Sandler is teaming up with Martin Scorsese for an upcoming movie. A24 is currently producing Uncut Gems, which is to be directed by the up-and-coming duo the Safdie brothers. Scorsese, easily one of the greatest living filmmakers working today, will executive produce the movie, which has just tapped the Happy Gilmore and Grown Ups star to headline the cast. This makes for an unexpected pairing, but one that could be quite promising.
Benny Safdie and Joshua Safdie made their way onto everyone's radar last year with their movie Good Time, which was also distributed by A24. The movie starred Robert Pattinson and, though it didn't make a huge splash at the box office, the movie managed to win over critics and is considered by many to be one of the better movies of 2017. That being the case, putting Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems, which is to be their follow-up to Good Time, is worthy of some interest. Jonah Hill has also been tapped to star in the movie, which is said to be taking place in the diamond district in New York City.
Over the years, and especially in recent years, Adam Sandler has mostly starred in and produces comedies that are trashed by critics (usually for good reason) that are the most lowbrow of lowbrow. Specifically, as of late, his Netflix movies like The Ridiculous Six and The Do Over make it seem like Sandler has nothing left to offer moviegoers beyond the lowest of low-hanging comedy fruit. However, when he's paired with a talented filmmaker and given good material to work with, Sandler can provide something special and, working with Martin Scorsese and a couple of young but proven directors may be just what he needs.
Movies like Paul Thomas Anderson's Punch Drunk Love have shown that Adam Sandler can deliver a truly Oscar-caliber performance. More recently, he starred in The Meyerowitz Stories, which was directed by Noah Baumbach and was distributed by Netflix, and featured one of his best performances in more than a decade. Were it not such a crowded awards season field last year, he may have had a shot at an Academy Award nomination. So there's plenty of reason to think that with the help of Martin Scorsese, this could be a Sandler movie that might actually be good.
Plot details for Uncut Gems are currently being kept under wraps by the studio, so it's nearly impossible to speculate as to what kind of role Adam Sandler is going to have in the movie. Scott Rudin and Eli Bush are producing for Scott Rudin Productions, with Elara Pictures' Sebastian Bear-McClard and Oscar Boyson also on board the production team. Martin Scorsese serves as an executive producer, along with Emma Tillinger Koskoff. Uncut Gems does not have a release date at this time, but it is expected to being production this year, so 2019 seems likely. This news comes to us courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter.
