Hulu Is Successfully Capitalizing On The Untapped Potential Of True Crime Genre

Candy by Hulu
Hulu

Hulu seems to have found success with the true crime genre. From original documentaries to dramatizations of horrific crimes, Hulu is home to several hair-raising tales of real-life murderers and fraudsters. Presently, the platform is airing the docudrama The Dropout, starring Amanda Seyfried as Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the now-defunct health technology company, Theranos. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether (New Girl), The Dropout also stars Naveen Andrews, William H. Macy, Lauri Metcalf, Elizabeth Marvel, and Stephen Fry.

The Girl from Plainville also debuted on Hulu recently. The show is based on the "texting suicide case" involving Massachusetts teens Conrad Roy and Michelle Carter. Roy was repeatedly encouraged by Carter, his girlfriend, to kill himself in text messages and ultimately died by suicide. Elle Fanning plays Michelle Carter in the show alongside Chloe Sevigny, Cara Buono, Colton Ryan, and Aya Cash. The Girl from Plainville premiered on Hulu on March 29.

Another anticipated Hulu series to look forward to is Candy, starring Jessica Biel and Melanie Lynskey. The five-part series is based on the 1980 murder of Betty Gore by her friend, Candy Montgomery. Biel will play Candy, with Lynskey as Betty Gore. The series recently released its first trailer and will debut on Hulu on May 9, 2022.
