Universal has signed a deal with Mattle Toys to build a film franchise around their iconic Bold|Barbie doll. According to Variety, Laurence Mark is set to produce the film, which is being set up as a major project for Universal due to its well-known name brand.

The film is moving ahead at a fast rate of speed because of Barbie's popularity. The toy has 99% worldwide brand awareness, is the number one girl's toy on the market, and is the top doll property in the United States. Universal chairman Marc Shmuger stated, "Barbie is the most famous doll in history, a unique cultural icon in the world of brands. So many representations of Barbie frequent pop culture, but never before has she been brought to life in a motion picture. We're grateful to Mattel for entrusting us with this extraordinary opportunity."

Writers are currently being sought for the project as Universal decides which direction they want to take the film. Marc continued about the upcoming franchise, stating, "Barbie may be the most popular girl in the world, and has always been a wonderfully aspirational figure, so we must do her proud." The film will, of course, be family friendly.

Universal is moving ahead fast on a Barbie film, but no timeline has been established as far as shooting dates and a release schedule. The biggest factor in bringing Barbie to the screen is finding the right actor to play her. Which could take some time.
