According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has picked up Broken Lizard's new comedy project, Rogue Scholars. In addition to this the studio bought an untitled project from the group.
The Motion Picture Corporation of America has teamed up with Broken Lizard on the films and is going to co-finance both projects via its studio feature film investment fund.
Rogue Scholars is being positioned as a college comedy centered around five unruly professors. They are played by the members of Broken Lizard which are Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske. The group writes all their movies.
Presently, details about the second project are being kept secret. Both are in the script stage.
"Every five to 10 years, there's a new group that comes to the fore in the comedy world," Krevoy stated. "If you look at their body of work and see that they understand modern comedy, they are ready for that breakout. We want to expand them out of their core audience into a four-quadrant audience. They are worth the commitment to get these films made."
