From Captain America and Buzz Lightyear to the Human Torch and even just playing himself (in Free Guy), Chris Evans has taken on some iconic roles. The Boston native has gone from that recognizable face in small efforts like The Perfect Score and Not Another Teen Movie to a quintessential Marvel-A-lister.

In 2019, Evans appeared in four feature films, including two MCU hits and the surprising box office smash Knives Out. He's everywhere; we can't wait to see what's next. Besides his beloved role as Steve Rogers (which Evans likely won't return to), the actor has also extended his reach to other film adaptations of comic books and graphic novels, such as TMNT (2007), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) and Snowpiercer (2013).

In addition to gracing the screen, Evans made his directorial debut in 2014 with the romantic drama Before We Go, which he also produced and starred in. He also made his Broadway debut in 2018's acclaimed revival of the great Kenneth Lonergan's play Lobby Hero, which earned Evans a Drama League Award nomination.

Updated October 27, 2023: In honor of the release of Pain Hustlers, this article has been updated to reflect Evans's current slate of projects he has lined up.

After mixed responses to Lightyear and The Gray Man in 2022 and the negative reaction to 2023's Ghosted and Pain Hustlers, fans of Evans will be hoping that the actor's run of bad movies will come to an end soon. The good news is, with a bunch of projects in the works, whether they're wrapped, in development, or merely announced. It shouldn't be too long before Evans has another hit on his hands. So, here's a closer look at the versatile actor's highly anticipated on-screen efforts.

In January 2022, it was reported that Evans had signed on to star alongside action movie superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in Prime Video's upcoming holiday outing, Red One. As reported by Deadline, Evans' role in proceedings is unknown at this time, and not much is known about the plot of Red One either. However, the project has been described as "a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre."

Furthermore, a photo posted on Johnson's Instagram page appears to hint at the appearance of Krampus, the legendary bad guy of Christmas, which is exciting news for fans of the demonic villain. Despite the film's plot being kept under wraps, it's still exciting to imagine what two hardcore action stars can do with a movie based around "the most wonderful time of the year." Red One is set for release sometime in 2023, but with the year winding down, there are only two more months until this film is supposed to be released. Amazon MGM Studios could drop it as a surprise holiday gift for 2023 or hold it back for the holiday season of 2024.

Evans is also set to step into some big musical shoes, with the actor rumored to be playing Hollywood legend Gene Kelly in an upcoming untitled film. The project is reportedly based on an original idea from Evans. While a studio has not been attached to this film yet, Evans is set to produce the film with Skyfall writer John Logan, who will also be penning the movie's screenplay. In addition, Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman, and Mark Kassen will also be producing the film through their company, T-Street Productions. This project will be the first reunion between Evans, Johnson, and Bergman since 2019’s Knives Out, with its highly-anticipated sequel set to be released this December on Netflix.

According to Deadline, the synopsis for the project, conceived initially by Evans, will follow "a 12-year-old boy who works on the MGM lot in 1952 and begins to create an imagined friendship with the legendary movie star Kelly while working on his next film." The great Gene Kelly was a larger-than-life figure, and it should be fascinating to see him depicted on-screen.

Bermuda (TBD)

Bermuda Triangle Movie Lures in Chris Evans and Doctor Strange Director

Director Scott Derrickson has lined up his next movie, with Evans set to star. The Doctor Strange and Black Phone filmmaker is set to tackle an action/adventure take on the Bermuda Triangle. According to a new report, Derrickson will work alongside his writing partner, C. Robert Cargill, with whom he collaborated on Doctor Strange and the Blumhouse horror hit Sinister. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers (Spider-Man: Homecoming) penned the most recent draft of the screenplay.

Derrickson and Cargill are additionally set to serve as executive producers on the project. Plot details are being kept under wraps, except for the fact that it will be set in the mysterious patch of the Caribbean where planes and ships have gone missing over the years.

An exotic plant in a downtown flower shop convinces the storekeeper's meek apprentice to resort to gruesome measures to keep it alive and make it grow. That's the enticing logline of Little Shop of Horrors, a remake that Warner Bros. is continuing to put together with Chris Evans being eyed to star. The project, which has been in development for several years, hails from Arrow creator and TV mega-producer Greg Berlanti. According to reports, Evans would reunite with Marvel co-star Scarlett Johansson, who is said to be attached to a key role.

These Remakes Were Even Better Than the Original Movies
It can be quite the hefty challenge to live up to the reputation of the original, yet when done effectively can yield lucrative and memorable results.

In an interview with MTV News, Evans explained that filming was supposed to start a few years ago, but "COVID happened, and there were budget issues". However, he remains hopeful that the remake will happen at some point in the near future. Evans' role was previously played by Steve Martin in the 1986 movie, which was directed by Frank Oz and adapted from the popular Broadway musical of the same name. Taron Egerton is also circling the role of Seymour, who was played by Rick Moranis in the '86 film, and Jonathan Haze in the classic Roger Corman original.

In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Evans spoke about his hopes for the future and discussed how he'd like to emulate fellow Hollywood star Seth Rogen. He explained that he likes "autonomous things" and wants the ability to "make something". Evans has directed in the past, so it would be interesting to see the actor use his post-Marvel clout to transition into a directing career. As long as he doesn't give up the acting altogether.
