In a story from The Hollywood Reporter, USA Network is looking to make a show based on the 1990 feature film, The Freshman.

This would mark the cable channel's first major series development that is based on an existing property in eight years.

Andrew Bergman wrote and directed the 1990 movie that starred Matthew Broderick and Marlon Brando. He will write the series adaptation for Sony TV.

The film followed "a wide-eyed NYU freshman (Broderick) who unwittingly becomes an errand boy for a Mafia boss (Brando)."

"The big challenge is to not repeat ourselves too often, and 'Freshman' was a fresh way to approach light character drama that was within the bull's-eye (of our brand)," stated Bill McGoldrick, USA's senior Vice President of original scripted programming.

Bergman will also executive produce this project with Michael Edelstein.
