Earlier today, we showed you new photos from the highly-anticipated Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, which offered our first look at the metropolis Alpha and the alien race known as Kortan Dahuk. While we get ready for the first trailer that arrives tomorrow morning, we have yet another photo to show you, with our first ever look at singer/actress Rihanna, who plays a mystery character. Director Luc Besson says she was his first choice for the role. The filmmaker explains why Rihanna was perfect for his movie.

"Rihanna was my first wish. First, because of her voice and the way she smiles and looks and how she expresses herself. Second, because you know she won't be intimidated on the set. She plays stadiums with 100,000 people. You know that girl isn't shy about the camera and the crew and all this."

Entertainment Weekly caught up with Luc Besson, who reveals that Rihanna will be seen in more than 20 minutes of the movie, with her role reportedly providing "many surprises." Judging from the brief GIF video and photo below, Rihanna's currently-unnamed character is a performer of some sort. Here's what Luc Besson had to say about the actress, and her work ethic.

"She was very direct with me. She said 'Luc, I want to learn, I want to work. Just let me do it.' And I must say that she was a great partner and did everything I asked. And believe me - I asked too much."

It's possible that Rihanna's character hails from the mega-metropolis of Alpha, described as an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha's seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time, uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of their citizens. Another part of Alpha is a massive tourist attraction known as The Big Market, the largest commerce center in the universe that exists in an alternate dimension.

The story centers on Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne), special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe. Valerian has more in mind than a professional relationship with his partner- blatantly chasing after her with propositions of romance. But his extensive history with women, and her traditional values, drive Laureline to continuously rebuff him. Under directive from their Commander (Clive Owen), Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Take a look at this first look photo at Rihanna from Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets for the first trailer debuting tomorrow morning.
