A Vanilla Ice biopic called To the Extreme may be in the works, with Dave Franco set to star as the rapper. Thanks to the success of Bohemian Rhapsody, which is now the highest-grossing biopic of all time, music biopics are going to be all the rage in Hollywood over the next handful of years, as other studios are surely going to try and chase that success. It appears as though a small group of individuals is hoping to do so by telling the tale of Robert Matthew Van Winkle, aka Vanilla Ice.

According to a new production listing, Dave Franco is attached to play Vanilla Ice in a biopic titled To The Extreme, named for his record-breaking debut album, which sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. The album includes his hit song Ice Ice Baby, which was the first ever rap song to top the Billboard charts. The production listing includes a brief logline for the Vanilla Ice biopic, which reads as follows.

From a high school dropout selling used cars in Dallas to having the first hip-hop single to top the Billboard charts with Ice Ice Baby, a young Vanilla Ice struggles with stardom, extortion attempts, and selling out as he makes music history.

Chris Goodwin and Phil Van are on board to pen the screenplay, with Dave Franco's older brother, James Franco, listed as a producer. There are no other actors listed for the project at this time, nor is there a director attached. It's also not listed as being in active development, meaning that it's very much in the early stages. Per the listing, Ramona Films and Endeavor Content are the companies behind the biopic currently. Once a script is completed, they would likely look to partner with a major studio to bring the movie to life.

Vanilla Ice has had a long and interesting career, but he is largely known as a one-hit wonder. Case in point, when one heads to his Spotify page, the top three songs are Ice Ice Baby from three different releases. From there, it's a distant fourth place to the Ninja Rap, which he made for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action movie in the 90s. Hopefully, that particular moment in his career will be documented in this biopic. Outside of music, Vanilla Ice has starred in reality TV shows, battled drug issues and has faced his fair share of legal issues over the years. Lots to potentially mine for story in there.

Dave Franco, as far as the acting choice goes, is intriguing. He looks just enough like him to possibly pull it off and has proven that he has both comedic and dramatic chops, starring in a wide range of roles in movies like Neighbors, The Disaster Artist and Netflix's 6 Balloons. We'll have to wait and see if this project picks up any actual steam in the coming months, but this is definitely something to watch out for. This news was first reported by Production Weekly.
