After devouring the box office in October, Venom has now made its way to home video just in time for Christmas. The movie comes in many formats, but one version people should consider buying is the exclusive Blu-ray set sold by Walmart. As you'd expect, it comes with both Blu-ray and DVD discs, along with a digital copy code. Better yet, Walmart is also including a retro action figure of the titular antihero in the same box. To help promote the exclusive set, Walmart has also created a video ad reminiscent of actual toy commercials from the late '80s and early '90s. For collectors, it's an awesome concept, and hopefully one which will be replicated with other movies in the future.
In Venom, Tom Hardy stars as a journalist named Eddie Brock, who comes into contact with an alien symbiote. He gains superpowers when the symbiote take control of his body, and comes to enjoy his newfound strength. However, his moral compass comes into play when the alien species reveals their intent to consume the inhabitants of Earth, offering to spare Brock if he assists the symbiote in these sinister plans. The movie would be met with a lot of criticism upon its release, but most everyone seemed to agree that Hardy's performance as Brock is one of the movie's brightest aspects.
While Sony was obviously hoping for the best with Venom, its tremendous success was still considered to be a big surprise for everyone. Although the critics weren't very kind with Venom, its reception with the audience fared much better. It turns out that the negative reviews weren't enough to scare ticket buyers across the world from checking it out. The movie broke several box office records for the month of October, earning over $850 million worldwide. A sequel is reportedly already in the works, which is even teased in a mid-credits scene after the movie. With too much red tape blocking the introduction of Spider-Man into the story, the next movie will likely focus on a feud between Venom and Cletus Kasady, otherwise known as Carnage.
Although the character comes from Marvel, Venom has no relation to the movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, producer Amy Pascal has said that their intent was for Venom to still be set in that same world, even if no direct acknowledgment is made. This keeps it possible for their version of Venom to one day merge with the MCU, possibly by having the character show up in one of their movies or vice versa. For fans of Spider-Man: Homecoming, seeing Tom Holland's Peter Parker tussling with Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock would be especially exciting. With different major studios involved, however, it all comes down to negotiations, requiring a deal which makes everyone happy.
If you missed the movie in theaters, now is the time to see what all the hype is about. Venom is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K, and digital outlets everywhere. However, the version with the retro action figure is exclusive and can only be found at Walmart. You can watch their retro ad for the Blu-ray and figure pack below!
