Chronicle director Josh Trank is in negotiations to direct the long-gestating superhero spin-off Venom for Sony Pictures.

The project has been in development since 2008, way back when Sam Raimi was in talks to direct Spider-man 4. The project was initially intended as a starring vehicle for Topher Grace, who played Venom in Spider-Man 3. The project fell apart in December 2009, when Topher Grace indicated he would not return for the spin-off. It is believed that Topher Grace will not play the title character in this new version.

Now it seems the project is back on track, with Sony seeking out a new screenwriter to tackle Venom. Writers such as Jacob Aaron Estes and the Zombieland team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were attached to write the script at one point.

With The Amazing Spider-Man just around the corner, the studio seems confident in expanding their rebooted superhero franchise with Venom.
