William Shakespeare's timeless Romeo and Juliet tale is getting an action-packed twist, with Sony Pictures picking up the spec script Verona by Neil Widener and Gavin James. Verona is the city where the original Romeo and Juliet story unfolds, but Heat Vision Blog reports that the script re-imagines the love story, set in a world similar to Zack Snyder's stylized action epic 300. No specific plot details were released at this time.

This certainly won't be the first time that Romeo and Juliet was taken in a new direction. Baz Luhrmann directed the 1996 drama Romeo + Juliet, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, which was an uber-violent take on the original play that still kept William Shakespeare's original dialogue intact. It remains to be seen if Neil Widener and Gavin James will also keep Shakespeare's same dialogue or if they will go in a different direction. Other notable adaptations include Lloyd Kaufman's Tromeo and Juliet and the 2013 Romeo and Juliet adaptation starring Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld, which featured updated dialogue.

Joe Roth is set to produce for Sony, which acquired the project in a competitive bidding situation. Sony's Hannah Minghella and Matthew Milam are overseeing the project for the studio. Joe Roth is currently in post-production on Disney's Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, and he is also in pre-production on Universal's The Huntsman, a prequel to 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman.
