A new V/H/S movie is officially in the works at Shudder. Ahead of the premiere of the fifth installment of the series, V/H/S/99, it has been announced by Shudder that the horror streaming platform will also develop a sixth movie called V/H/S/85. The movie is a continuation of Studio71's hit found footage anthology franchise that began with the release of the original V/H/S in 2012. V/H/S/85 will premiere on Shudder in 2023, though fans can first catch V/H/S/99 on the streamer when it debuts on Oct. 20.

It has also been revealed that acclaimed filmmakers from the horror genre will be teaming up to contribute the various stories featured in V/H/S/85. This includes David Bruckner, whose Hellraiser reboot just premiered on Hulu, as well as Scott Derrickson, who made waves this year with the release of The Black Phone. They'll be contributing segments alongside Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell, Culture Shock), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike P. Nelson (Wrong Turn).

“Since its inception, the V/H/S franchise has been a showcase for both established and emerging horror filmmakers to terrify audiences with innovative takes on the found footage genre," Shudder General Manager Craig Engler said in a statement. "Following the success of last year’s hit V/H/S/94 and this year’s upcoming V/H/S/99, we are totally stoked to take Shudder members back to 1985 with a wicked new collection of scares from some of the most radical horror directors working today.”

Bruckner, who marks his return to the franchise after his involvement in the original, added: “The V/H/S series is a continued love letter to found footage nastiness and the mad variety of anthology horror. Having helmed a segment of the OG film, I’m beyond excited to be back behind the camera in V/H/S/85, alongside some of my very favorite voices in the genre.”

The first installment of the franchise to be developed as a collaboration between Shudder and Studio71 was V/H/S/94. The film debuted to strong reviews from critics, scoring an impressive 90% on Rotten Tomatoes for a certified fresh rating. It also set the biggest premiere in Shudder history, scoring the most viewers for the horror streaming platform with its opening weekend. It continues to be a top performing title on Shudder nearly a year later.

Meanwhile, the franchise will have V/H/S/99 bridge the gap between 94 and 85. The film debuted at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival and is set to premiere on Shudder on Oct. 20, 2022. The film includes stories from Maggie Levin (Into the Dark: My Valentine), Johannes Roberts (Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City), Flying Lotus (Kuso), Tyler MacIntyre (Tragedy Girls), and Joseph & Vanessa Winter (Deadstream). V/H/S/99 harkens back to the final punk rock analog days of VHS while taking one gian leap forward into the new millennium.
