All good things must come to an end. Such is the case with History's Vikings, which will be calling it quits after season 6 finishes airing. It had largely been suspected that season 6 will be the final go around for the hit History series, but now it's been confirmed. However, for those who are concerned that the adventures will stop altogether, fear not! We have word that a spin-off series is already in the works, which would keep the franchise alive in a new way.

According to a new report, Vikings season 6, which consists of 20 episodes, will conclude the series. It's expected that the first episodes from season 6, which has already been filmed, will air later this year, with the finale likely to air in 2020. Though, no premiere date or firm finale date has been locked down or announced by History at this time. Vikings is currently airing its fifth season, which is nearing a close. All told, the series will consist of 89 episodes, when counting the additional 20 coming with the final season.

Even though we still have some time before Vikings wraps up, History is wasting no time in making sure they can extend the franchise and keep their hit going in some way. They are in negotiations with MGM and creator Michael Hirst for a spin-off series already. There are no details currently available for the spin-off, but it would see writer Jeb Stuart, known for his work on action classics such as Die Hard and The Fugitive, coming in to work on the new show alongside Hirst. The report notes that this potential spin-off is in the early stages of development.

Bringing in someone new, like Jeb Stuart, is significant. Part of what makes Vikings so unique within the television landscape is that Michael Hirst has written every single episode of the series himself. That's highly unusual in Hollywood, but it's worked out quite well. History previously hadn't done much in the way of scripted programming and this was the network's first real foray into scripted drama. Since its debut in 2013, it's cemented its place as the History's number one scripted series. The cast includes Jonathan Rhys Meyers Katheryn Winnick, Gustaf Skarsgard, Alex Hogh Andersen, Alexander Ludwig, Georgia Hirst, Peter Franzen, Jordan Patrick Smith and Marco Ilso.

Vikings always had limited runway, as the show centers on Ragnar Lothbrok one of the most famous figures in Norse mythology. The later seasons, following his death in season 4, have followed his sons. With a limited number of stories to tell within the confines of the actual historical events and figures the show is based on, the creative team has been working toward the show's conclusion for some time now. The Vikings season 5 finale is set to air on January 30. We'll be sure to keep you posted as any further details on the potential spin-off are made available. This news was first reported by Deadline.
