Viola Davis seems to be quickly being established as a connecting thread with the new world order of the DCEU. With the Snyderverse clearly over, it could be that Warner Bros. are already realigning their comic book franchise around the villain of Amanda Waller who will appear for the fourth time in Black Adam. With Dwayne Johnson having spent the last year repeatedly telling everyone that Black Adam is coming to change the hierarchy of the DCEU, it could be going further than that.

Black Adam is already bringing in a whole new roster of DC characters by introducing the Justice Society of America, which comprises of Dr Fate, Atom Smasher, Hawkman and Cyclone, but speculation has been rife about which existing DCEU members could be appearing in the movie. While director Jaume Collet-Serra has already shut down possible appearances by Superman and Shazam, it looks like one surprise addition to the movie is Davis’ Amanda Waller.

Having already debuted in 2016’s Suicide Squad and returned for James Gunn’s soft reboot of The Suicide Squad and HBO Max series Peacemaker, the character is now said to be getting her own spin-off show. Now her appearance in Black Adam seems to be setting Waller up as some kind of connecting thread between the new entries in the DCEU. Although there are no details about how Waller will figure in the movie, it is an interesting addition considering Black Adam was originally planned as the villain for Suicide Squad 2.

While it unlikely that Viola Davis will have been able to film a huge role for Black Adam without someone noticing, she is likely to appear in a similar kind of limited cameo that she had in Peacemaker. However, it could signal a huge change in Warner Bros. DCEU plans and could tie in with the future of the franchise. Black Adam could add some context to Waller’s current position in the universe, or could set up either the upcoming series or potentially set up another tease for further down the line.

While it is heavily rumored that The Flash movie is going to make some changes to the DCEU, all of this could be part of the plan to finally bring some kind of coherence to the proceedings of the franchise. With James Gunn heavily involved in several projects, and recent comments suggesting that there is a plan emerging behind the scenes with movies like Batgirl and Blue Beetle, which will be arriving alongside Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Flash and Shazam! Fury of the Gods.

Of course there are still a number of months to go before we see anything new from the DCEU, and that will be Black Adam’s October arrival in cinemas. However, the subsequent releases come in quick succession after that, starting with Shazam! Fury of the Gods in December, and by the next time San Diego Comic-Con comes around, we will know a lot more about where the DCEU’s future is heading.
