There's another giant robot movie headed our way. According to Variety, Mark Gordon and Company have teamed with New Regency to bring Voltron: Defender of the Universe to life via the big screen.

The film could be turned into a possible franchise. It will be based on the popular line of Japanese toys from the 80s, which spawned an animated television series. Justin Marks is writing the first draft of the script, which is described as a post-apocalyptic tale of survival set in New York City and Mexico City.

The animated series revolved around five Galaxy Alliance pilots whose vehicles formed into the giant sword-wielding robot Voltron. They basically battled evil every week, saving the planet time and time again.

There is no official word as to when the film will go into production.
