Last month, Netflix announced that it is teaming up with Nerdist Industries and DreamWorks Animation to create a new animated Voltron TV series, although it isn't known when the series may debut. Today, Nerdist has unveiled the official logo for the TV series, which reveals the official title is Voltron: Legendary Defender. The streaming service hasn't announced any voice cast members yet, or the creative talent behind the show.
This report claims that the show will follow the formula of the original series, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which debuted in 1984. The story follows the adventures of a team of astronauts who all pilot a massive robot. The original series only ran for three seasons, but it spawned other shows such as Voltron: The Third Dimension in 1998 and, most recently, Voltron Force in 2011. However, there will one big change with the new series.
Nerdist reports that the series will center on five teenagers, not astronauts like the original show, but they will all pilot large robotic lions that will combine to form Voltron. Nerdist also announced that they will be visiting DreamWorks Animation in the next few weeks to present a behind-the-scenes look at the series. Hopefully then we'll learn who will be voicing the main characters.
The expansion of Netflix, Inc. and DreamWorks Animation's current multi-year deal also covers streaming rights to the DreamWorks Animation feature film library. In addition, the deal extends the rights of current original series for kids from the studio available on the service throughout operating Netflix markets as well as expanding to include second window rights for the series everywhere around the world, outside of China. Series include The Adventures of Puss in Boots, Dinotrux, Dragons: Race to the Edge, among others.
Netflix hasn't announced when Voltron: Legendary Defender may debut on the streaming service, but we'll keep you posted with any updates as soon as they're available. Are you looking forward to this new version of Voltron, or would you rather just watch the original series over and over again? Chime in with your thoughts after checking out the official logo.
