This latest episode of The Walking Dead was a heartbreaker for fans of the series. After eight years, Chandler Riggs is saying goodbye, as Carl Grimes was given his send-off in the mid-season premiere. This was something fans knew was coming, given the events in The Walking Dead season 8 mid-season finale, but that didn't make things any easier. Now, AMC has released an official tribute video for Carl Grimes, which is sure to bring any Walking Dead fan to tears.

Carl Grimes was bitten by a walker on his torso in the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead season 8, meaning he was going to die. There was no way around it. In the latest episode, that death came to pass and it's easily one of the biggest deaths, if not the single biggest death, the show has had during the course of its run. And that's saying something. To honor Chandler Riggs' work over the years, AMC put together this In Memoriam of Carl Grimes video, which looks back at the character from season 1 all the way through his final moments. Riggs spoke with Variety after the mid-season premiere and spoke a bit about his death on The Walking Dead. Here's what he had to say.

"His death leaves behind a really inspiring and motivational feeling. He's not really angry about it. He's not lashing out against anyone. It's his fault that it happened and there's nothing that he can do about it. So it's him trying to show Rick every lesson that he's learned over the last few years."

Initially, there was some backlash when it was revealed that Carl was going to be killed. Not only from fans, but some of the show's cast members, including Andrew Lincoln, were vocal about their distaste over the decision and how it was handled. In any case, Chandler Riggs has made his peace with it and gave Carl a truly emotional goodbye. The cast and crew honored him on his last day of filming as well, as Riggs tells it.

"Right after I finished that scene I walked off set and the whole crew had eye patches like Carl's on. They were all clapping and cheering. It was pretty overwhelming and really sweet of them. They gave me a hat that Andy wore in Season 1 and a framed shirt that I had worn in Season 1, which was really cool. It was really weird waking up that next morning, but bittersweet is the best way to describe it."

How will The Walking Dead soldier on without Carl Grimes? That remains to be seen, but it's up to Judith Grimes to try and fill her big brother's shoes in the future. The Walking Dead season 8 resumes this Sunday on AMC. Be sure to check out the emotional in memoriam video tribute to Carl Grimes, courtesy of the AMC YouTube channel, for yourself below.
