Fans of The Walking Dead have just one more month to wait for the show's return. Longtime viewers of the show should be especially excited, as the quality of the writing seems to be on an upswing. Namely, it's going to be intriguing to see how the storyline plays out with the show's next major threat in the form of a group called the Whisperers. Straight from the comics, the most disturbing group of psychopaths wearing dead flesh are certainly the most disturbing villains from the Walking Dead universe yet. To give fans an idea of what's coming, their leaders Alpha (Samantha Morton) and Beta (Ryan Hurst) are introduced in an all-new season 9B teaser trailer from AMC.

In the creepy clip, we can see several members from the group being secretly watched. It appears to be zombies watching them, but it quickly becomes clear that they are not actually undead. Rather, they are merely wearing dead flesh over their own for maximum camouflage against both the walkers and the living. These people are the Whisperers, named as such due to the way they silently communicate. Their leaders Alpha and Beta can be seen standing in front of the rest of the group, with Alpha shushing them with her finger. Against the ominous music playing, the footage is ultra creepy, and the introduction of the group seems to be the start of a promising storyline.

It sort of feels like season 9 is more of a sequel to the series, rather than a continuation. The departure of Andrew Lincoln in the early episodes all but wrapped up the initial story that began the series, which focused on Rick Grimes searching for his family. With Lori and Carl both dead and Rick having since left the show, it would seem the original plot has come to a close. The six-year time jump only further detaches the show's current direction from the past even more. Still, longtime fans have many of their favorite characters remaining, such as Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier. The Whisperers are also coming in with plenty of potential.

AMC has expressed their interest in keeping the Walking Dead universe alive for at least another decade. If ratings for the main series continue to fall, then the writing could be on the wall for the show to finally come to an end. Still, there are apparently plans for another companion series to be developed in addition to Fear the Walking Dead. Rick's story will also resume in no less than three made-for-TV movies which will air on AMC at some point in the future. Ratings and money will ultimately play the biggest role in what ends up happening to the show, but as of now, there are no plans to bring the show to an end anytime soon.

The Walking Dead comes back with new episodes beginning on Feb. 10. It remains to be seen if a horrifying new threat will be enough to help restore some of the waning interest from casual fans in the series. The Whisperers look absolutely frightening, but it might be too little, too late. You can watch the new teaser for season 9B in the video below from AMC.
