The Walking Dead may not have reached its conclusion yet, but Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan are already working on the next steps for their respective characters Negan and Maggie. The pair will be reunited on spin-off show The Walking Dead: Dead City, which will see the once mortal enemies relocated to a zombie-infested Manhattan Island. In a new behind-the-scenes shot of Morgan and Cohan between takes, they certainly look more than happy to be continuing their journey together.

The Walking Dead is currently about to start airing the third and final part of its 11th season on AMC, which will bring the survival horror series to a close after more than a decade. While the series itself has had a number of ups and downs in viewer numbers, that hasn’t stopped the show branching out with sister shows such as Fear The Walking Dead, Walking Dead: The World Beyond and this summer’s Tales of the Walking Dead. For those who have stuck with the zombie franchise, even with the flagship series at an end there are plenty more stories to be told.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan shared the latest snap from the set of Dead City on his Instagram, commenting that it “feels like we’re making something special.” With Morgan’s Negan being one of the high points of The Walking Dead, there is no doubt his many fans will undoubtedly agree.

The Walking Dead will have three new spin-off shows coming next year, with others already being developed, but with many of them centering on main characters from the series, it had almost made the ending of the flagship show a pointless exercise. With other spin-offs focusing on Daryl – and a reunion with Carol having already been teased for the future – along with a Rick and Michonne limited series, there is very little jeopardy in the season 11 finale. It is possible that there will still be a number of characters who do not make it, we know the core stars will be safe.

This is something that Jeffrey Dean Morgan wished could have been handled differently. He recently discussed the spin-off series, and revealed that he would have not announced them until after the end of The Walking Dead. He said in an interview earlier this month:

"That's not the way we should have gone about it. But this is how it was chosen to play out. And who knows? Maybe we couldn't have kept the secret. But it seems to me we could have given it a shot. I would've tried to go about it in a different way, but look, that's above my pay grade."

Regardless of this faux pas, The Walking Dead has really upped its game in season 10 and 11 after spending a couple of seasons dragging its heels and losing viewers in droves. As the storyline of the Commonwealth now heads into its last leg, there are more tuning in to see how the once groundbreaking series comes to a conclusion. With so many spin-offs planned for next year though, it is almost not like the end of a series, but just the end of a chapter.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC next month for its final 8 episodes.
