Don't bring up the Oscars controversy around Wanda Sykes for a while. Back in March, Sykes served as one of three hosts of the Academy Awards alongside Amy Schumer and Regina Hall. What overshadowed anything else that happened that evening was, of course, the moment when Will Smith confronted Chris Rock. As millions around the world watched live, Smith smacked Rock over a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith then shouted obscenities at a bewildered Rock before the show pretty much moved on as planned.

Sykes, a close friend of Rock's, still feels unhappy about what happened that day. Per People, she recently touched on the subject while speaking at a comedy tour stop at the Dr. Philips Center for the Performing Arts. Using some colorful language, Sykes questions why Smith was allowed to remain present at the ceremony, going on to win his Oscar. She also made it clear she wants nothing to do with Smith for the foreseeable future.

"I'm still traumatized. I can't talk about it. I get emotional. I couldn't believe he was still sitting there, like an assh---. Shouldn't you be sitting there with a lawyer or LAPD, motherf-----? I hope he gets his s--- together. Until then, f--- him."

Sykes is not alone with that opinion. While Smith had come under a lot of fire for slapping Rock, there had been backlash leveled against the Academy as well. Many viewers felt that it was inappropriate to honor Smith with an award, allowing him to even give a heartfelt acceptance speech, after he'd physically attacked a presenter earlier that evening. The Academy has since banned Smith from attending all events for the next ten years.

Shortly after the incident, Wanda Sykes appeared on Ellen where she spoke about the Oscars. She addressed how it felt "sickening" for her to watch, and this was especially so as someone who's such close friends with Chris Rock. She similarly spoke about how she was disturbed by Smith staying in his seat as if he'd done nothing wrong, questioning why the actor was not immediately removed from the building.

“I just felt so awful for my friend Chris. It was sickening, absolutely sickening. I physically felt ill, and I’m still a little traumatized by it. And for them to let him stay in that room and enjoy the rest of the show and accept his award, I was like, ‘How gross is this? This is just the wrong message.' You assault somebody, you get escorted out the building and that’s it. For them to let him continue, I thought was gross.”

Sykes also said that Rock approached her at an afterparty later that night. She claims that Rock apologized to her as soon as she saw him, telling her that she was doing "such a great job" hosting alongside Amy Schumer and Regina Hall. For his part, Rock has kept pretty quiet about the incident publicly, though she's had a few light jokes about it during recent comedy appearances.
