It looks like Warner Bros is getting Looney again! According to Screenrant, the classic cat and bird duo are returning in a brand new movie, King Tweety! The trailer and synopsis are available below.

KING TWEETY is a brand-new, high-flying adventure featuring Looney Tunes beloved characters Tweety, Sylvester and Granny as they jet-off to the Canary Islands where Tweety is crowned king.

While this movie takes a departure from the classic “cat tries to eat bird” formula, it offers a fresh new take on the characters. Tweety, Sylvester, and Granny are brought to a lush tropical paradise after the former queen disappears. While Tweety’s enjoying the high life, Sylvester discovers a secret plot to take the little bird down and tries to stop them. Antics and shenanigans ensue, but can the mystery be solved?

Tweety is a Little Bird with a Long History

King Tweety

Ever since his premiere, in the Oscar winning 1942 short A Tale of Two Kitties, Tweety has enjoyed the life of a titular Looney Tune. He’s appeared in 46 cartoons over the golden age of animation between 1942 and 1962. Outside of the classic shorts, Tweety has made numerous appearances in other Looney Tunes media. If the Tunes are features, odds are you’ll see Tweety with them! These appearances include films such as Space Jam, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and the new Looney Tunes Cartoons from HBO Max.

The little bird also starred in his own show and film! In 1995, Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries starred the two (along with Granny and the dog Hector) solving mysteries around the world. In 2000, Tweety starred in his first movie in the direct-to-video film, Tweety’s High-Flying Adventure. The film followed Tweety as he was sent on a mission to travel the world in 80 days to raise money for a nearby children’s park. King Tweety will be the iconic bird’s second feature film which has him in a starring role.

King Tweety’s release is part of a celebration of the little canary’s 80th anniversary! Warner Bros. is putting together an “80 Years of Tweety” campaign, which will premiere in Austin at SXSW 2022 on March 11th. The first of 80 murals will debut at the event, which is a collaboration between artists around the world. The murals will be free to enjoy and available in multiple countries, you can keep up with their releases via a tracker on the 80 Years of Tweety Website.

Warner Bros. is definitely bringing out the guns when it comes to giving attention to the Looney Tunes gang. In 2020, HBO Max premiered the Looney Tunes Cartoons, a brand-new series of shorts that brings the classic characters back to their roots. The shorts gained praise from fans of all ages for keeping to the spirit of the golden age shorts.

It’s always nice to see Warner Bros. wanting to continue working with these characters. Sometimes sticking to the classic shorts formula works the best, but breaking free of the old mold and trying a different approach can be equally as fun and refreshing! While the visual designs and formula may be diverted from the classic shorts, the same whacky humor still shines through. King Tweety will be available on DVD and Digital in late spring!
