Variety reports that Warner Bros. is developing a movie based on Glen David Gold's novel Carter Beats the Devil. Jonathan Shestack (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past) will produce this project.

The book is about real-life magician Carter the Great. This property had previously been in development at Paramount. It was optioned in 2002 for Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner to produce.

Michael Gilio will be adapting the novel. The script will focus on the magician's skills and various abilities of deception.

The novel opens with the mysterious death of President Warren G. Harding and then the invention of TV by Philo T. Farnsworth. It goes through the life and magic of Carter the Great, beginning with his first magic show in the blizzard of 1897 when he was only 9 years old.
