The records have already started for The Dark Knight's Blu-ray disc, a month before the discs are set to arrive. According to Video Business, sources have revealed that Warner Bros. intends to ship 1 million The Dark Knight Blu-ray units for its first week of release.

It is believed that this would be the biggest first-week Blu-ray shipment ever, although Warner Bros. wouldn't comment on their shipping schedule. The Blu-ray format itself has been surging since its format war win over HD DVD. Last March, Casino Royale became the first Blu-ray title to ship over 100,000 units in the first week.

It is believed that this mass The Dark Knight Blu-ray rollout will be used as a trigger for consumers to switch to 1080p.

"Given its release date timing and our research, this indicates that a lot of customers are waiting to purchase this title," said Dorinda Marticorena, Warner senior VP of worldwide marketing and high-def. "If a household is on the fence about making a Blu-ray player or PS3 purchase, this title can be influential in making that happen."

The Dark Knight will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on December 9.
