It's not common to find real-life stories that talk about a dramatic rise to fame and an equally quick fall mixed with failure, love, and greed. It all sounds too made up. But that's what happened in the case of WeWork. Adam Neumann, the founder and then CEO of WeWork, had everything going for him as his company was valued at $47 billion. As Apple TV+ announced its new show WeCrashed last year, it was clear this story isn't just about the spectacular downfall of this globally recognized company.

WeCrashed will revolve around WeWork founder and CEO Adam Neumann and his wife, Rebekah Neumann. It will show how their startup WeWork reached meteoric success and fell just as quickly thanks to all the extravagant lifestyle the couple led and the controversies that plagued the company. Now that the show is soon approaching its release date, here is everything we know so far, including the new casting addition and what’s happening behind the scenes. Let’s get right into it.

Plot: What We Know

WeCrashed is based on a podcast with the same name. The movie will chronicle the quick rise and the subsequent and explosive fall of WeWork, which offers shared workspaces with offices all around the world. The company was once even compared to the likes of Airbnb and Uber. WeWork had a straightforward business model, purchasing long-term leases on commercial office spaces and leasing the same space as short-term rentals. It was an instant hit amongst freelance workers, small businesses, and others looking to share creative workspaces. Before all the details were leaked to the press, including conflicts of interests, gross mismanagement, and quarterly losses that investors couldn’t believe, WeWork was valued at a staggering $47 billion.

The then CEO of the company, Adam Neumann, was accused of muddying all these red flags. At the same time, he took out personal loans from his company to fund his own ventures, living a lavish lifestyle on the company account, and owning the interest in four properties that WeWork leased. Business Insider, who reported the story, called the entire scandal “a humiliating comedown.” The financial media outlet went on to say, "What was supposed to be Neumann's coronation as a visionary became one of the most catastrophically bungled attempted debuts in business history," and included documented critiques from multiple companies and Columbia University experts.

Considering that the events transpired in real life and the podcast's success, there was no doubt the WeWork story would make an excellent docu-series. However, that’s not all the showrunners aim to bring to our screens, as they will add in even more nail-biting drama to the TV adaptation. It has become known that the Neumanns led a very volatile lifestyle. Adam struggled with drug use and alcoholism as the company began to falter. His self-stylings as a Kabbalistic mystic saw his company as a “capitalist kibbutz.” To add to that, Adam also developed an increasing paranoia.

Cast: What We Know

The main cast will be Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway, who will take on the roles of Adam Neumann and Rebekah Neumann, respectively. The pair were signed on to play these roles earlier this year and serve as the series’ executive producers. America Ferrera of NBC’s Superstore fame will also be joining the cast. She is perhaps known most widely for her role as the titular Betty on ABC network’s Ugly Betty. Ferrera will be playing the role of one of the WeWork employees whose life was significantly affected because of her proximity to Adam Neumann and his wife.

Showrunners Drew Crevello and Lee Eisenberg have also brought on John Requa and Glen Ficarra as directors. Eisenberg’s most notable work is 2011’s Bad Teacher and 2019’s Good Boys, while Crevello, an executive at Warner Bros., most recently worked on the 2018 adaptation of Tomb Raider. Ficarra is an industry veteran, and his credits include 2011’s Ryan Gosling-Emma Stone starring rom-com Crazy, Stupid, Love. Requa has also worked on the same film and many others, including Tina Fey’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot in 2016.
