If all goes well, there will be one more season of Westworld to properly conclude the story. First debuting on HBO in 2016, the series is created Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, taking inspiration from the 1973 film of the same name by Michael Crichton. The TV show wrapped up its fourth season in August, and as of now, there hasn't been an official renewal for season 5, leaving the future of Westworld unknown.
Speaking about the fate of the series at New York Comic-Con, Nolan confirmed that there are ongoing discussions at HBO for season 5. He also stated that, if the renewal happens, it would also mark the final season of the series. Nolan claims that the creative team had been hoping for a five-season run, so giving Westworld just one more season would properly allow them to finish telling their story. With that said, the renewal is not guaranteed just yet. Per Deadline, here's what Nolan said at NYCC about the future of Westworld:
“We always planned for a fifth and final season. We are still in conversations with the network. We very much hope to make them."
Westworld Will End With Season 5 If Fans Are Lucky
These remarks follow previous comments from Joy that they have an "ending in mind" for Westworld, but that they weren't there yet with the end of season 4. In a separate interview, per TheWrap, Joy similarly stated in August that they were planning on having season 5 serve as the final season of the series, and that season 4 was not developed as a potential season finale.
“We had always planned on ending the series next season. You know, we always thought that Westworld should kind of come full circle and back to the West. But with Dolores, who was just a player in other people’s games, finally getting to write her own. Just to close up a lot of the stuff that we’ve seen before like the flashforward with The Man in Black and everything, so we have a plan for Season 5 but you know, life can make other plans for you. So we’ll just hope for the best.”
Now, fans will have to just wait and see what happens with Westworld, which currently remains on the bubble. Typically, HBO has renewed Westworld while previous seasons were still airing, and this is the first time that hasn't happened. The Warner Bros. Discovery merger has further complicated matters. But with all of that said, the show hasn't been officially canceled yet either, so there is hope for the fans that the series will get its final fifth season.
