As much as no actor likes to be typecast, there are some roles that become so career-defining that its impossible to separate the performer from the role they play. Anyone who's ever been a fan of The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, either as a kid or as an adult will probably always know actress Amy Jo Johnson as the Pink Power Ranger. The now iconic original show has sprouted into a massive franchise that includes comic books, cartoons, video games, and movies. However, back when the popular show first began, the original team became a beloved part of millions of people's childhoods all over the world.

While the actors who played the original Power Rangers have frequently returned for reunions and the films, there was a noticeable absence from the most recent movie, The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always. Fans couldn't help but notice that Amy Jo Johnson, who played the original Pink Ranger was not included in the film, aside from archival footage of her voice being used in it.

While Johnson continued acting long after the original show ended, the actress hasn't had a very prolific on-screen presence in the last few years. This has caused many fans of her to question, where Amy Jo Johnson has been and what's been up to recently.

After making a fair few film and TV series appearances in the early 2000s, Amy Jo Johnson joined the main cast of Flashpoint, a Canadian police procedural show. After success with the show between 2008 and 2012, she later made recurring appearances in the USA Network's action-drama show, Covert Affairs. She also wrote and directed two short films called Bent and Lines between 2013 and 2014. Thereafter, Johnson did notably appear in 2017's Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. Her appearance in the film was just a cameo, however, this was more than enough to spark nostalgia and delight fans of the original show.

Later that same year, Johnson also starred in the Canadian film, The Space Between, also directing and producing that movie. She then directed the Canadian dark comedy, Tammy's Always Dying, which starred Felicity Huffman. Between 2019 and 2022, the now 52-year-old actress and filmmaker didn't make many notable appearances, but did play the lead in a miniseries called The Has Been, a show that followed the journey of an aging actress who turns to Comic-Con fandom because of her massive debts.

Since 2019, Amy Jo Johnson hasn't appeared in any new films. However, last year, she did briefly emerge once again to direct an episode of The CW's Superman & Lois. Aside from this, Amy Jo Johnson's absence from the upcoming Netflix film, The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always, left fans wondering what she would be up to. Luckily, she later confirmed her reasons for not being in the film.

After rumors began circulating online that she had turned down the chance to appear in the film because she wasn't being paid enough, the actress was quick to put these rumors to bed. In a Tweet from March of this year, she had this to say about all the controversy:

"Please stop saying I didn’t do the reunion because of money. Simply not true. Maybe I just didn’t want to wear spandex in my 50s or couldn’t go to NZ for a month. Or none of ur beeswax JDF & I both chose not to for our own reasons. They filmed before he passed."

This left many fans feeling pretty upset at the prospect that a fan-favorite since the franchise's inception appeared to be completely done with it after decades of being associated with her iconic character. However, luckily, Johnson later confirmed that this wasn't true, and she just had other plans for the Rangers.

Rather than forcing herself to be involved with the show when she clearly does not want to, Johnson instead delighted fans when it was confirmed via Variety that she simply had other plans for her involvement in the franchise. Johnson further confirmed that she will be working on writing a new Power Rangers comic book series for Boom Studios. This came on the heels of a Kickstarter campaign netting nearly half a million dollars for a Power Rangers: A 30th Anniversary Comic Book Celebration.

Johnson has apparently been working on this concept since the pandemic. Far from stepping away from the franchise and breaking many fans' hearts, Johnson and her partner Matt reportedly worked on the idea together. The best part is that Johnson apparently wants to do this for the fans for all their support of the franchise over the years. While Netflix's edition to the franchise is set to include all the other original cast members, save for Johnson, her plans appear to be headed toward a more personal touch.

Either way, it seems her fans, and fans of the Power Rangers in general can breathe a sigh of relief for now as Amy Jo Johnson has no immediate plans of quitting the beloved franchise any time soon.
