Back in the early 90s a new movie called White Men Can’t Jump helped Woody Harrelson find his feet in the movie industry in the wake of Cheers heading towards a conclusion, and also boosted the career of Wesley Snipes. Now it looks like the basketball based film is all set to get the remake treatment and is seeking out Calmatic to direct fresh off his work helming the reboot of House Party for New Line. According to Deadline, the director will be working with a script co-written by Doug Hall and Kenya Barris, who will also be producing the movie.

In the original movie, two street basketball hustlers attempt to hustle each other and then join forces to try and make a bigger score based on the notion that "white men can't jump". Whether the remake will be a straight like for like as far as the story is concerned is unknown, but as with most remakes it is not likely that the idea will stray too far away from the plot of the original movie.

Calmatic has been mostly known up to now for directing many music videos including a small song that you may have heard of called Old Town Road, and he has also frequently worked with the likes of Khalid, Pharrell and Zayn. We have still to see how he has coped with a bigger project like House Party, but if that is a success, then we can no doubt expect to see his name being attached to some other projects in the near future.

The original White Men Can’t Jump was a huge hit in 1992, becoming one of the highest grossing movies of the year after taking $90.7 million globally from its $31million budget. The film was a hit with both critics and audiences, managed to pull in a 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a general opinion that the clever script and charismatic leads pulled of a fresh take on the sports comedy, which had been very popular around the time.

As you would expect with any popular sports based movie, a video game based on the film was released soon afterwards for the Atari Jaguar, and Nike joined forces with the movie’s creators to put out a collection of footwear inspired by the lead characters of Billy Hoyle and Sidney Deane. In addition to that, the film’s soundtrack produced the single White Men Can’t Jump and a second album called White Men Can’t Rap.

The remake will be the latest in a line-up of '80s and '90s sporting movies that are being brought back to life for a modern audience. This has included a Disney+ revival of The Mighty Ducks, as well as a new series based on A League of Their Own heading to Amazon Prime Video. Whether White Men Can’t Jump will managed to bring something new to the table when the original movie was quite a simple story that was told well enough to still be watchable today. However, with more outlets than ever before for movies, the revival of a popular movie that is now unfathomably three decades old is a sure way to a hit.
