The superhero origin story has become familiar to most moviegoers since the superhero craze has flooded theaters over the past several years. Generally, an unfortunate accident befalls an everyday character who then must learn to utilize their powers to save the world. Usually a Nick Fury, Professor X, or Uncle Ben style mentor plays a role in helping shape these characters. The New Mutants tells a darker story about what could happen to these unlikely heroes if Professor X, or another mentor, never found them.

As one of the many casualties of the COVID-19 pandemic, New Mutants came and went without a lot of attention. While the film was not well-liked by its new Disney owners and was a certified box office bomb (not even grossing $50 million on its roughly $80 million budget), some fans liked the new perspective the film has to offer. Whether you are looking for a cheat sheet to avoid watching the film or are just needing a refresher, here are the most important cast and characters from New Mutants.

Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt)

20th Century Studios

Danielle is the only member of the new mutants that has yet to discover her powers. Finding her powers is a central plot point to the film, so anyone not looking for spoilers should skip this paragraph. After Danielle survives an accident that destroyed everyone and everything on her reservation, Dr. Cecilia Ryes brings Danielle to the creepy hospital for mutants. As accidents continue happening around the facility, Danielle eventually earns her superhero name, Mirage, for her ability to create immersive visions or mirages of other character's fears.

Blu Hunt also stars in the CW TV series The Originals. She got her start in a short film called One Block Away, but many audience members are probably unfamiliar with her other work. As an actress in her mid-20s, Hunt is still developing her image and making a name for herself. But with two teenage fantasy dramas under her belt, we can hope to see her in more fantastical roles going forward

Illyana Rasputin (Anya Taylor-Joy)

Illyana and Danielle don't get along at first, and Illyana is more than happy to show off her powers in a fight against Danielle. Illyana's powers allow her to travel through dimensions and to access the soul sword, a powerful weapon that combats magical creatures and spells. Her abilities to use and fight against powerful magic give Illyana the superhero name, Magik.

Anya Taylor-Joy captures the dark, disillusioned, and angry personality in her portrayal of Illyana. Anya Taylor-Joy starred as similarly mentally unstable character in the Netflix original series The Queen's Gambit. Her other recognized projects include The Menu, The Northman, and Last Night in Soho.

Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton)

Aptly given the name Cannonball, Sam flies through the air at great speeds and gains indestructibility while in motion. Sam uses his powers less like traditional flying superheroes and more like the cannonballs he is named after. His indestructibility allows him to walk away from most collisions, even though most of his targets don't. Charlie Heaton has primarily worked on dark horror and thriller projects like New Mutants. He is most famous for his role in Stranger Things, but Heaton also preformed in other thrillers like Shut In and Marrowbone.

Roberto da Costa (Henry Zaga)

Roberto da Costa, also called Sunspot, repurposes solar energy to give himself powers. He transforms into a Human Torch-like man engulfed in flames, and can fly, increase strength, and shoot busts of energy. Henrique (Henry) Zaga is a Brazilian actor with a lot of his career still ahead of him. Before New Mutants, he starred in The Stand, Teen Wolf, and the Netflix original series 13 Reasons Why.

Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams)

The young superhero team would be nothing without their resident brainiac, Rahne Sinclair. However, Rahne's powers go far beyond her mind. She can turn into a wolf at will and take on super human senses, strength, speed, and endurance, and is known as Wolfsbane. Her massive power combined with her massive brains makes Rahne an essential part of the team. Maisie Williams is an English actor famous for her roles in shows like Game of Thrones and Doctor Who.

Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga)

The movie's villain, Cecelia Reyes, comes with years of experience and training that make her a formidable foe. Besides her connections and knowledge as a doctor, Cecilia can create almost impenetrable force fields that are perfect for confining our heroes. Alice Braga brings her own experiences and expertise to the role. She is famous for her roles in other sci-fi-style films like I am Legend, Predators, and Elysium.
