UPDATE: James Gunn has posted the following tweets in regards to this latest rumor.

ORIGINAL STORY: CBM has an interesting rumor that seems like a no brainer, and it could very well be true. Marvel is reportedly in a panic over losing director Edgar Wright so close to the start date for Ant-Man. Unable to find a quick replacement, they are staying in house, and going with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

Marvel needs a director that will stay in line with their studio vision, and follow notes and new drafts of the screenplay. This is the main reason Edgar Wright walked away from the project. The latest version of the screenplay was pulled away from him and co-writer Joe Cornish, despite the pair having worked on the movie now for nearly a decade. And the new draft of the script did not meet Edgar Wright's approval, so he quickly parted ways with the studio.

James Gunn would be an interesting choice to tackle the project, as he's managed to stay on both parties' good side during the whole divorce. For a time, Guardians of the Galaxy was viewed as a movie that may have spun too far outside of Marvel's wheelhouse. While audiences haven't yet cast their deciding vote at the box office, they have responded greatly to the trailers and advanced promotion for the film, and Marvel clearly believes it has another hit on its hands with the adventures of Star-Lord and his team.

James Gunn has pleased Marvel executives, and he has proven that he can work within their guidelines without incident. The studio is reportedly very happy with recent screenings of Guardians of the Galaxy, and James is already familiar with Ant-Man as a project. He will need to do very little catching up.

The problem may be with James Gunn himself, who is already trying to figure out his next move as a director. He may already have another project lined-up that will bring him back to his indie roots, and give him a break from the stress of a giant blockbuster. This may or may not be true, but its said that if Marvel can't lock down James Gunn, they may hire one of his brothers, Brian Gunn or Sean Gunn, both of whom are familiar with the way Marvel works. But right now, hiring James Gunn for Ant-Man is their key priority.

Neither Marvel nor Disney have confirmed James Gunn as the director of Ant-Man. Usually quite vocal on all social media, the director hasn't yet responded to this news. Instead, he's posted some fun tweets and an Instagram photo of himself with Zoe Saldana, running ADR on Gamora. Take a look, and let us know what you think...Is James Gunn the only man who can pull off Ant-Man while keeping all interested parties happy?
