Coming up to the premiere of Willow on Disney+, showrunner Jonathan Kasdan is feeling hopeful about the future of the franchise. Thought the original movie, released in 1988, has long been a beloved cult classic, it was never given an official sequel. That changes with the new Willow series on Disney+ with Warwick Davis returning as the titular hero, finally continuing the character's story but with the switch from the big screen to the small screen. The show will premiere on Disney+ on Nov. 30.

Speaking about the show's future (via Looper), Kasdan made it clear that Willow wasn't developed as a limited series. Ideally, the show will go on to have more new seasons produced, but that will obviously depend upon how fans react to the series continuation. But Kasdan is dreaming a bit bigger than just hoping for a renewal for season 2 and beyond. If Willow the TV show turns out to be a hit with fans, Kasdan imagines that it could even lead to a movie sequel getting made as well.

"We'd love to continue the story on. Where it seems to be that the street leads from movies to TV, I hope that we're headed toward a moment where the reverse direction can be done too."

While Kasdan is keeping the door for Willow 2 open, the also doesn't want to get too far ahead of himself. Before any potential talks about a new movie can happen, Willow must first get a renewal for season 2, which would show that fans are embracing the return of Willow Ufgood and would want more of the story to be told.

"The first thing we'd like to do is another season because we've got a lot more that we'd like to tell here."
