The upcoming slasher take on beloved children’s character Winnie the Pooh, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, will land in theaters for a (very) limited time. A new report courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Fathom Events has now acquired the distribution rights to the Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, and will play the twisted take on the literary classic “across hundreds of U.S. theaters” for one day on February 15, 2023.
Not only that, but Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey will also receive a release in several international markets, including the United Kingdom, Mexico, and Canada, with the studio hoping to open the movie in further markets across the globe.
A warped retelling of the A. A. Milne and E. H. Shepard's Winnie-the-Pooh books, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey finds the likes of Pooh, Piglet and friends as you’ve never seen them before. Indeed, you probably hoped to never see them this way. As every child knows, Christopher Robin befriended Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, and their friends, playing games and also providing them with food. What we all don’t know, however, is that as he grew, these visits became more infrequent, as did the food supply, causing Pooh and the others to grow increasingly hungry and desperate.
When Christopher went off to college, his visits to the 100 Acre Wood stopped completely, causing Pooh and Piglet to become completely feral and unhinged. Which sadly resulted in Eeyore getting killed and eaten at some point. Now, Christopher Robin has returned to the forest alongside his new wife, hoping to introduce her to his old friends. Unfortunately for them, Pooh and Piglet will not forgive that easily, with the pair going on a murderous rampage for human flesh as they antagonize a group of university girls who are occupying a rural cabin.
Directed and written by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, this horrifying take on the characters is only possible due to The Walt Disney Company no longer holding exclusive movie rights to the characters as they were first depicted, thus enabling them to enter the public domain.
The Creators of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey Are Working on Other Twisted Takes on Classic Characters
The creators behind Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey are currently working on other twisted takes on other classic characters, such as Peter Pan and Thor. "Essentially we've been kind of doing that for the last like year now," director Rhys Frake-Waterfield revealed earlier this year. "Like with you know like Humpty Dumpty and things like that and there was there was other ideas we had in mind. For example like Thor, the the Norse God isn't the property of Marvel so we could do kind of our own interpretation of that if we wanted. It didn't have the same like ring as Winnie did so we went on Winnie and done that. We've got loads of other ones planned as well so like we're doing a Peter Pan one."
Starring Nikolai Leon as Christopher Robin alongside Amber Doig-Thorne, Maria Taylor, Danielle Ronald, Natasha Tosini, May Kelly, Paula Coiz, Natasha Rose Mills as Jess, and Craig David Dowsett and Chris Cordell as Winnie-the-Pooh and Piglet respectively, Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey will be released on February 15, 2023, for a one-night event and is coming soon to DVD and VOD worldwide.
