Spoiler Warning: Witcher Season 2 & 3

Henry Cavill, star of the hit series The Witcher, has a very exercise-positive Instagram. With him being the Man of Steel and all, it must be challenging to maintain a literal Superman-level of fitness. But over the past few weeks, observant fans might have noticed his morning jogs going to more...remote locations. Instead of the Hollywood premieres and events he posted for season 2 of The Witcher, Cavill started posting little updates after finishing his morning cardio from what looked like a deep forest. A few weeks later, Netflix released a photo on their Instagram of all the main characters, Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, and Henry Cavill, all sitting with their backs to the camera in full costume. There was also a post on Twitter that included a small summary of the plot for the upcoming season and served as the first official announcement that season 3 had started production.

The magical, fantastical, dysfunctional family we all know and love is back and starting their journey to outrun the forces of darkness. Last we left them, Geralt, Cerci, and Yennefer were reunited after defeating Voleth Meir and gazing upon the Wild Hunt. Nilfgaard mounts its strength against the North, and Elves cause havoc for the kingdoms of men. Kaer Morhen was left nearly destroyed, or at least more nearly destroyed than we found it. We discovered that the emperor of Nilfgaard, the "White Flame," was actually Ciri's long-lost father. And Dijkstra is going after Jaskier! Ye Gods! Everything is set up for quite the amazing season.

Big Hopes for Season 3

For what we know about season 3, the Twitter summary went something like this:

"As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri's magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl's untapped powers; instead, they discover they've landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line—or risk losing each other forever."

The showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich spoke to TechRadar about how eager she was for the third season. While she couldn't reveal anything major (it is just the start of production, after all), she did say how excited she was for this chapter in The Witcher series. The season will be based on the second novel by Andrzej Sapkowski, who wrote the books that The Witcher is based on. The book is entitled The Time of Contempt and is Hissrich's favorite one in the series.

If you're in that particular group of fans that don't care about spoilers but don't want to read the source material, there's a summary of the novel on Wikipedia. For all others, Hissrich is really setting the stakes high, saying, "I feel like seasons 1 and 2 have been laying the playing field for everything huge that’s about to happen." And that's saying something, considering how exciting the first two seasons were. The producer Steve Gaub added, "We definitely won't be going smaller in season 3."

For Those Who Can’t Wait for Season 3

Unfortunately, we're still not sure when season 3 will be released. It's likely that it won't be released until 2023. But for those who simply can't wait for more Witcher, the six-part miniseries The Witcher: Blood Origin will be coming out sometime this year. Those working on the show said it will "surprise" viewers. It's going to be different. Hissrich said, "it can’t just be another branch of our medieval fantasy," implying they are going in a slightly different direction with the spin-off.

The series will take place 1,200 years before the time when The Witcher is set. It will detail how witchers were created and happens in the same world but before the Conjunction of the Spheres, which was the cataclysmic event that effectively created this universe amongst multiverses. This was a time in which elves still ruled, and humans hadn't yet come to exist in the world. The elven dominance of the planet will be most disruptive to viewers. Hissrich said, "in some ways, it looks more modern." So we'll see exactly what the crew has in store for us when Blood Origin premiers on Netflix.

As for The Witcher, the board is set for a great third season. And Hissrich is confident that it will be good, "but the creative process is now really just starting. We have the scripts, and now we’ll bring directors on, the actors back in, and really start delving in deeper and reflecting back and making sure that it’s the perfect season." We'll just have to remain satisfied with Henry Cavill's morning cardio until then.
