With the X-Men due to eventually join the ever-growing Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have all been left wondering who will be picking up the spiky-haired, pointy-hand mantle of Wolverine. With Hugh Jackman having bowed out of the role after a whopping 17 years, and with the Australian actor now being so synonymous with the character, whoever is chosen to step into his adamantium skeleton has quite a task on their hands.
Well, thanks to some wonderfully rendered fan art, we can now see what actor Jon Bernthal would look like as the fan-favourite member of the X-Men. The artwork was accompanied with the following caption, with the artist justifying his casting choice.
"I think @jonnybernthal is the perfect #Punisher / #frankcastle but if Marvel do Recast Punisher. Jon Bernthal would be perfect for #wolverine He's got the physique and the animalistic nature down. #Logan #Wolverine #jonbernthal."
Depicting Bernthal with the iconic triple claws, a cigar in his mouth and, of course, sporting the bizarre hairstyle and extreme sideburns that give the character his animalistic look, Bernthal's rugged face and gruff exterior come together to make a great looking Logan for the MCU. Though the actor stands much taller than the comic book counterparts small-statured 5'3'', Bernthal's physicality edges somewhat closer than Hugh Jackman's towering 6'2'', something which many fans took issue with at the time.
Rumors initially said that Kingsman: The Secret Service star Taron Egerton had been offered Wolverine, but the actor quickly denied the reports. Since then, Keanu Reeves and Daniel Radcliffe have been portrayed as Wolverine by fan artists. In fact, a petition from Change.org asking for Danny DeVito to be cast as Wolverine in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has received over 50,000 signatures. Though it remains very unlikely that the 75 year old actor will ever grace the screen as the Wolverine, it would certainly be a sight well worth seeing.
This would not be Bernthal's first foray into the Marvel Universe, with the actor already having received rave reviews for his portrayal of another violent anti-hero, Frank Castle aka The Punisher. After exacting revenge on those responsible for the death of his wife and children, Frank Castle uncovers a conspiracy that runs far deeper than New York's criminal underworld. Now known throughout the city as The Punisher, he must discover the truth about injustices that affect more than his family alone. Though the second season was not as well received as the first, Bernthal's performance has been universally praised with many fans hoping he will return to the part despite the cancellation of the show.
Understandably, the fans are eager to find out who will play next Wolverine when he finally makes his MCU debut, and they will continue to speculate on social media until an official announcement is made. Bernthal definitely seems like a good fit for the character, with his bad-guy charm and his past success playing anti-hero roles, both in and out of the Marvel universe. Sadly, the fans still have to wait to find out who the next Wolverine is going to be. This comes from spdrmnkyxxiii's artstation on Instagram.
