Originally releasing in theaters and on HBO Max in December 2020, Wonder Woman 1984 spent the past year getting sold to more consumers than any other film's home media release. As reported by The Numbers, the sequel sold 1,427,830 units during the course of 2021 through its Blu-rays and DVDs, comfortably ahead of the competition. This news might come as a bit of a surprise for DC fans as the film was not exactly welcomed with viewers and critics with open arms.

Following Wonder Woman 1984, the rest of the movies filling out the top ten in order are The Croods: A New Age, Raya and the Last Dragon, Godzilla vs. Kong, Monster Hunter, News of the World, Soul, Harry Potter: The Complete Collection Years 1-7, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum, and Tenet.

Serving as a sequel to the 2017 film Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984 brings back star Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins. Geoff Johns, Dave Callaham, and Jenkins penned the script. Along with Gadot, the film also stars Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen. It is set during the Cold War and follows Diana and her past love Steve Trevor facing off against Maxwell Lord and Cheetah. It's hard to accurately judge how financially successful the film was as it had a day-and-date release during the pandemic but it's more than made up for it with its home media sales.

It has since been confirmed that there will be a third Wonder Woman movie. Recently, Gal Gadot confirmed that the sequel is in development with the screenplay now being written. However fans shouldn't count on catching the film anytime soon as Gadot also says filming probably won't begin for another year and a half.

There aren't many plot details about Wonder Woman 3 but previous Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter will play a big part in the film. Teasing Carter's arrival, Gadot previously said, "First of all, Lynda has mentored me from the very first moment that I got cast as Wonder Woman. She was always there, talking to me, giving me tips and everything. She's a true champion of what Patty and I have been doing, and it was so great that we managed to find the right opportunity to bring her to the last movie and now to the third one. It's even better this time. I love her very much. I love her dearly."

"We're super excited about Wonder Woman 3," Patty Jenkins also said at DC FanDome when the film was first announced. "We are all three very excited about some things coming up with Wonder Woman 3.”

While we're waiting to find out additional information about the plot, Gadot has also suggested that she doesn't want to spend any more time in the past, so we could be through with the prequels. It will be interesting to see where Gadot and Jenkins take this story next to further flesh out Diana Prince and the DCEU.
