DC fans were left shocked earlier this week when it was suddenly announced that Wonder Woman 3 with director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot has been canceled. Despite the project having received several promising updates over the last year. Well, a new report has offered further insight into what occurred behind-the-scenes, and it sounds like things got a little passive-aggressive.

According to TheWrap, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins ultimately decided to walk away from directing the sequel after her treatment was not well by Warner Bros. Film Group Co-Chairpersons and CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. As per the report, Wonder Woman 3 as Jenkins saw it did not work, with James Gunn and Peter Safran agreeing with their opinion on the treatment. Though they had “nothing to do with the decision.”

De Luca and Abdy "didn’t think it was the right direction for the franchise and asked Jenkins if she would consider pitching something else for the IP in another direction.” According to an insider, Jenkins refused to change her vision and let De Luca and Abdy “know that they were wrong, that they didn’t understand her, didn’t understand the character, didn’t understand character arcs and didn’t understand what Jenkins was trying to do.”

Jenkins’ accusations even resulted in the director sending De Luca an email which contained a link to the Wikipedia definition of “character arc.” Ouch. Further reports have even claimed that the character arc problems rivaled those seen in Jenkins’ previous, critically mixed outing, Wonder Woman 1984.

The report continues, stating that Jenkins was given the opportunity to make changes to Wonder Woman 3 and come back with a new pitch. “She stood firm to her vision and responded that if they didn’t want to do her treatment, she wasn’t going to do a different one and would instead just move on to her next film,” the report reads.

It is even claimed that Jenkins wanted nothing to do with new DC Chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. “She just doesn’t want to allow them to have a seat at the table to have an opinion on something new that she might come up with,” an insider said.

While Patty Jenkins’ time with Wonder Woman is seemingly over, there have since been reports claiming that Warner Bros. Pictures is still open to bringing Wonder Woman 3 to screens with Gal Gadot back as the title character.

For now, we will just have to wait and see how all of this shakes out. James Gunn recently took to social media in an attempt to provide some clarity to the ongoing rumors and speculation saying, “some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.” Whatever happens, it certainly sounds like the DCU will undergo some major changes over the next few years.
