Just when the gang was about to get back together for their first feature film, the Workaholics movie has been shelved. A continuation of the hit series Workaholics that aired on Comedy Central from 2011 to 2017, it was first announced in 2021 that a feature film adaptation was in the works at Paramount+. The film was to bring back original cast members like Adam Devine, Blake Anderson, Anders Holm, and Kyle Newacheck.

But the movie was apparently not meant to be. Taking to Instagram on Monday, Devine announced to fans that the powers that be at Paramount+ had pulled the plug on the project. He opened up on how disappointing it is to hear this, as the project was mere weeks away from filming. As Devine explains, he was told by the streamer that their film didn't fit into the new strategy that is getting laid down for the future of the content offerings on Paramount+.

"Welp, Paramount + decided to cancel the Workaholics movie," Devine says in the post. "Obviously, this news is the loosest butthole. We were suppose to begin filming in 5 weeks! P + told us don’t fit their new “global” strategy…We are deeply butt hurt about this decision because we were so excited to bring the weird one last time. I’m butt hurt that I don’t get to work with my best friends again. I’m butt hurt for the fans, and I’m butt hurt for our loyal crew, and other cast members who are now going to have to scramble to find new jobs."

Hoping that the film can find a new life elsewhere, Devine adds, "We are out to other streamers, and hopefully we will get to make this insanely fun movie somewhere else. Tomorrow tune into our podcast (This Is Important) to hear us talk about it. As always, take it sleazy, and I’m out."

Last month, Devine also spoke with us at MovieWeb about the Workaholics film. He similarly said that production was set to happen soon, looking at a start date for Spring 2023. At that time, the screenplay was getting its finishing touches with Devine noting that the whole cast was excited to get started with their work on the movie.

"Weirdly, this is going to be a strange year for me, because not only did I just do the Pitch Perfect series Bumper in Berlin, but we're doing the Workaholics movie in the spring for Paramount+," Devine said in December. "I just got off a phone call with the guys, Anders, Blake, and Kyle, and we're putting the finishing touches on the last draft of that script. So we're really excited to get going on it."

Time will tell if another streamer winds up picking up the Workaholics film, but for now, the news will likely come as just as much of a bummer for many fans as it does for Devine and the others.
