The popular Marvel cartoon show X-Men: The Animated Series is officially getting a revival. With tons of announcements coming out of the House of Mouse for Disney+ Day, there's plenty for fans to be excited about, but this news particularly stands out for any big fan of the show. A first look has been revealed by way of Disney unveiling the official logo for the revival, dubbed X-Men '97, along with word that it will be released on Disney+ in 2023.

More details about the animated series have been published at TheWrap. According to the outlet, X-Men '97 picks up right from where the original X-Men: The Animated Series show from the 1990s left off. It will include several cast members from the original show coming back to reprise their voice roles along with others stepping into new roles. Given the look of the logo, it's presumed that the new series will use a similar art style as well.

Returning cast members reportedly include Cal Dodd (Wolverine), Lenore Zann (Rogue), George Buza (Beast), Adrian Hough (Mr. Grey), Christopher Britton (Mr. Sinister), Catherine Disher (Jean Grey), Chris Potter (Gambit), Alison Sealy-Smith (Storm), and Alyson Court (Jubilee). Joining the cast are Jennifer Hale, Anniwaa Buachie, Ray Chase, Matthew Waterson, JP Karliak, Holly Chou, Jeff Bennett, and AJ LoCascio in undisclosed voice roles.

Beau DeMayo will serve as writer and executive producer on the Disney+ revival. Jake Castorena is supervising director with Charley Feldman a supervising producer. X-Men: The Animated Series writers Eric and Julia Lewald are said to be consulting on the new show along with director Larry Houston. This news follows previous claims from Houston that he was working hard on getting a revival of the 90s cartoon developed.

"We have let it be known that we are still here, we are not under the ground," Houston said earlier this year on the Much Talk About Nothing podcast. "We really want to pick up where we left off but it has been crickets and I really have no idea what they are doing. When I saw the WandaVision thing, I was like 'Oh my God!', they are taking the first baby step but we have not heard anything."

Last year, Houston also confirmed that there had been talks at Disney about reviving the animated series, but nothing had been made official at that time. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Houston said that "the one thing we'd like to do more than anything else is to continue where we left off." He noted, "We've had talks, but that's about it. We've made conversation and it's up to them to make the decision, but we've let them know that we're all available for whatever they want to do in the future."

It's taken some time, but X-Men '97 will finally give Larry Houston and the fans the revival they've long been hoping for. Because cartoons take even longer to develop, we won't see the new episodes until 2023, but it's certainly awesome to know that the popular series will be given a continuation. Especially with no new X-Men movies on the schedule at Marvel Studios to be released anytime soon.
