Back in September, we reported that 20th Century Fox's highly-anticipated superhero adventure X-Men: Apocalypse will re-cast iconic characters such as Storm, Jean Grey and Cyclops, which makes sense since we reported in March that the sequel will be set in the 1980s. Today, The Wrap is reporting that Chloe Moretz, Elle Fanning and Hailee Steinfeld are in contention to play Jean Grey, with Ben Hardy, Charlie Rowe and Timothée Chalamet being eyed for Cyclops.

Insiders claim that both Chloe Moretz and Elle Fanning have met with director Bryan Singer to discuss the role over the past few weeks, but it isn't clear if there is a front runner among the trio, and the site also mentions that Elle Fanning may not even be interested in the role. Sources claim that official test offers have not been made to any actress yet, and several others still remain in the mix.

Surprisingly enough, The Wrap reports that whoever plays the young Jean Grey is "expected to recur in future X-Men films." This appears to contradict a report from September, where producer Simon Kinberg confirmed that X-Men: Apocalypse concludes the trilogy that includes X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Of course, we have no clue where the franchise will go after X-Men: Apocalypse, but it's possible that a young Jean Grey could be utilized in flashback sequences or perhaps another time-travelling adventure. The original X-Men trilogy featured James Marsden and Famke Janssen as Cyclops and Jean Grey, who reprised their roles at the end of this summer's X-Men: Days of Future Past.
