This morning, 20th Century Fox finally released the first trailer for what is shaping up to be one of next year's biggest summer movies, X-Men: Apocalypse. If you've been poring over the new footage all day, you may be wondering about the identity of one mysterious character, who was only seen briefly during a scene with Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac). Empire has a new breakdown of this footage, where director Bryan Singer confirms that this bald character is in fact Caliban.
"Caliban's bald and has funky eyes. He's a great character. Really cool."
Back in May, Bryan Singer all but confirmed this mutant's presence, when he posted a photo from the Montreal set and revealed that this particular set is "Caliban's place of business." In the Marvel Comics, Caliban has the power to locate other mutants anywhere within a 25-mile radius, essentially making him a mutant version of Professor X's Cerebro machine, but on a lesser scale. Caliban is also part of a mutant group known as the Morlocks in the comic books, named after the creatures in H.G. Wells' novel The Time Machine. The Morlocks are primarily made up of mutants who have not been able to integrate themselves into society.
It isn't known if any other Morlocks will be featured in X-Men: Apocalypse, or how large a role Caliban may play in the film. Since this character is being visited by both Apocalypse and Storm, one of his Four Horsemen, it's possible that Apocalypse plans on using Caliban's powers to locate the rest of his Horsemen, Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Angel (Ben Hardy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender). Ironically, Caliban was actually Apocalypse's Horseman of Death for a brief period of time in the comics, but since the Horsemen have already been revealed, it seems unlikely that Caliban's story will follow that particular plot line.
Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction. It will be one of the greatest tests these Marvel superheroes have ever faced.
Also reprising their roles from X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past are Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Rose Byrne (Moira McTaggert), Evan Peters (Quicksilver). According to the film's IMDB page, Tómas Lemarquis (Snowpiercer) is portraying Caliban. He joins new cast members include Oscar Isaac as the villainous Apocalypse, Olivia Munn as Psylocke, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, Tye Sheridan as Cyclops and Kodi Smit-McPhee as Nightcrawler. Take a look at this image of Caliban from the trailer below, and stay tuned for more from X-Men: Apocalypse.
