In just a few short months, 20th Century Fox's X-Men prequel trilogy will come to a close, when X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27. Aside from spinoffs like the uber-successful Deadpool and upcoming projects like Gambit and The New Mutants, the studio hasn't said much else about the future of this franchise. Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Mystique in this superhero series, revealed in a new interview with Empire that she is dying to return to this universe after X-Men: Apocalypse.

"I am dying to come back. I love these movies, I love being in them. I love ensemble movies because it's not on anyone's shoulders."

Jennifer Lawrence played Mystique in 2011's X-Men: First Class, set in the 1960s, X-Men: Days of Future Past, which takes place in the 1970s, and X-Men: Apocalypse, which is set in 1983. During an interview from March 2015, the actress stated that X-Men: Apocalypse will be her last movie in the X-Men franchise. However, during another interview in July 2015, she said there is still hope of playing Mystique once again.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set 10 years after the events of X-Men: Days of Future Past, which set up a whole new present-day timeline for the franchise. While X-Men: Apocalypse is connected to this new timeline, it isn't known how Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique will fit into any stories that take place in the present, since verything that happened in the original trilogy has been erased from existence. It's always possible that 20th Century Fox will put a Mystique spinoff movie into development, set between 1983 and the present day timeline. But that has in no way ever been confirmed or even discussed by anyone involved with the franchise at this point.

There has also been rumors that 20th Century Fox wants Bryan Singer back to direct X-Men 7 next year, with the studio eyeing a possible 2018 release date. A report from November claimed that Bryan Singer will open production offices in November 2016 at Montreal's Mel's Studios, to prep for a shoot that will begin sometime in 2017. No story details or an official title have been confirmed yet, but if this is moving forward, then perhaps the director will find a place for Jennifer Lawrence to return as Mystique.
