The first film of the summer movie season got off to a solid start at midnight last night. According to Variety, X-Men Origins: Wolverine took in between $4.4 million and $5 million from midnight screenings last night.

20th Century Fox was still tallying the receipts from the midnight shows, so an official figure wasn't announced as of yet. Last year, Iron Man kicked off the summer season with a $5 million take from late Thursday night screenings, en route to an impressive $102 million opening weekend.

It was said that the midnight screenings were held in approximately 2,000 theaters nationwide. The film opens in 4,099 theaters today, the widest release Fox has ever had. While Fox estimated a $70 million opening weekend for the film, the end result could be much higher.
