Showtime's new series Yellowjackets was a big hit for the cabler and fans can't wait for the second season to get here soon enough. The good news is that the wait time does not appear to be too long with plans to bring the series back sooner than expected. Recently speaking with Vulture, Showtime president of entertainment Gary Levine divulged that the Yellowjackets team is planning season 2's premiere for later this year with the goal of producing new seasons each year thereafter.

"We are working towards a premiere at the end of 2022. We’d love to stay on an annual cycle. I think our audiences deserve that, and I also think that when you have a show that has this kind of a momentum, you don’t want to let it dissolve."

How long this show will ultimately last certainly depends upon the fans sticking around as the show moves forward, but there's a lot of interest that is currently surrounding it after the first season. Series creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson have said there are creative plans in place for five seasons, so the team working on the show is clearly on board to keep it going until at least that point.

Levine wasn't kidding when he said that Yellowjackets is riding a wave of momentum. It became the second-most watched Showtime series behind Dexter: New Blood, and that was an established property which had been very heavily promoted in the months leading up to its release.

Yellowjackets features an ensemble cast and is set between two separate timelines. One timeline follows teenage soccer players involved in a plane crash in 1996 that left them stranded in the Canadian wilderness, with the cast led by Sophie Nelisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, and Sammi Hanratty. Melanie Lynsky, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci play their adult counterparts with this present-day timeline focusing on what's currently happening in the lives of the survivors.

"The finale is a very satisfying finale, but it leaves lots of runway,” Levine says. “Yes, the show is sort of high concept, but it is also a character piece about the dynamics between characters when they’re tested, both in the wilderness and in adulthood. You can write those kinds of dynamics forever. This is not reliant upon, ‘What’s the answer to the secret?’ This has many secrets, many surprises, and a real human dimension that has longevity built into it.”

Levine also knew early on that this show had great potential. As he also explains, "I left that pitch spellbound by the story they told. I was completely unsure if they were talking about a real event or a made-up event — that’s how visceral it felt.”

The second season of Yellowjackets does not yet have an official release date, but if all goes well, the series will be back by the end of 2022 on Showtime.
