The DCU has already marked major changes for what's to come in the future of the DCEU's superheroes. Henry Cavill is out as Superman, and Dwayne Johnson has also since confirmed that his Black Adam won't be a part of the DCU's plans at this time. Wonder Woman 3 has also been canceled amid rumors that Gal Gadot could be finished with that character as well. Other rumors suggest a Batman Beyond movie with Michael Keaton was also squashed. This has all led to speculation that Zachary Levi could be done with Shazam as well. While he will appear in the upcoming sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods, there have been rumors that the film will end his run in the role, possibly with Shazam either getting recast or left out of the DCU moving forward. But when one fan lamented the possible loss of Levi as Shazam, the actor himself shot back a response that suggested that these rumors aren't true, teasing that he's going to be sticking around as the superhero."I want this not to be true because his Shazam is he ONE thing in the DCEU I would absolutely throw hands for to protect," one fan said on Twitter in response to the rumors that Levi was done as Shazam. In a response tweet, Levi added, "Oooh, I really wouldn’t go believing everything you see on the internet. I’m Gucci, Ash. We all Gucci."

It's not the first time Levi has teased more of his Shazam. He was recently at Comic Con Portugal where he was quoted (via The Direct) as saying that he was great friends with both James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new heads of DC Studios. That had him feeling optimistic about returning as Shazam, even with so many other big projects getting axed.

Responding to a fan asking if there would be a plan for Shazam int he DCU, Levi said, "So your question is, ‘If those are my two bosses, is there a plan and a future for Shazam?’ I would say ‘Yeah, I would hope so. I would hope so.’ Because those are my friends, and if they don’t have a plan, then they are not my friends anymore. No, sir."

Shazam Won't Get That Crossover With Black Adam and Superman

Comic-Con: Dwayne Johnson Confirms Shazam Role, Is He Black Adam?
Warner Bros. Animation

There had been speculation before the DC Studios changes that Levi's Shazam would eventually have a crossover with Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam and Henry Cavill's Superman. With the two of them gone, with plans to reboot Superman with a younger version of the character, that's not going to happen. But that does not necessarily mean that there won't be a future for Shazam moving forward, as Gunn has confirmed there will still be "some" standalone projects that won't need to be connected to the DCU.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be released in theaters on March 17, 2023.
