Divisive director Zack Snyder has shared a new look at the production of his upcoming sci-fi adventure flick, Rebel Moon. Snyder took to social media to tease the Netflix project, sharing footage of a make-up test and revealing one of the movie’s aliens. An alien that whose look is very Star Wars-meets-Hellraiser.

The Netflix Geeked Week event is currently underway, during which a lucky few were shown the first footage from Rebel Moon. While that footage has not made its way online (not yet anyway), this glimpse behind the scenes certainly gives us a good idea of the kind of science fiction universe that Zack Snyder is planning to create.

Rebel Moon is based on an original story that Snyder has conceived with Kurt Johnstad and will tell the story of “a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Belisarius. Desperate, the colonists dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them make a stand.”

Directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, Rebel Moon will be led by The Mummy star Sofia Boutella as Kora. The supporting cast meanwhile will be made up of The Gentlemen star Charlie Hunnam, Justice League’s Ray Fisher, and Gladiator star Djimon Hounsou. Additionally, Doona Bae, Staz Nair, Alfonso Herrera, Jena Malone, Stuart Martin, Ed Skrein, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Cleopatra Coleman, and Fra Fee will also feature.

Zack Snyder is Hoping to Spawn a Rebel Moon Franchise on Netflix

The plan is for Rebel Moon to not only be split into two epic movies, but also for the two-parter to spawn a massive new sci-fi franchise for Snyder and the streaming giant. "My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out," Snyder said of his intentions recently.

Snyder wanting to create a new franchise with Rebel Moon should not come as too much of a surprise, as the filmmaker was heavily inspired by the biggest sci-fi adventure franchise of all time: Star Wars. “This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It's my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure,” Snyder said of Rebel Moon. “My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out... I've spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I've been doing designs, constantly drawing, and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”

Rebel Moon will be Zack Snyder’s second franchise endeavour in conjunction with Netflix following the release of the zombie/heist outing Army of the Dead and the various spinoffs, prequels, and sequels thereafter.

Zack Snyder will produce Rebel Moon alongside his producing partner and wife Deborah Snyder. Production on Rebel Moon is now underway. The movie does not yet have a release date, but will land on Netflix sometime in the near future.
