Fans will be introduced to a new Selina Kyle in The Batman with Zoë Kravitz playing a new incarnation of the character. In the teasers and sneak peek photos, we've been able to get a good look at Kravitz in the role. While she has some qualities reminiscent of Catwoman, she's not quite yet the full-fledged supervillain she's destined to become.

In a recent interview with Empire, Kravitz shed a little more light on her portrayal of Selina. She noted how The Batman serves as an origin story for the new Selina with the future Catwoman still "figuring out who she is." Kravitz also teases a bright future for the character in the inevitable sequels, so even if she doesn't make the full transition into the superspy also known as Catwoman in The Batman, we'll still probably see it happen down the line.

“This is an origin story for Selina. So, it’s the beginning of her figuring out who she is, beyond just someone trying to survive. I think there’s a lot of space to grow and I think we are watching her become what I’m sure will be the femme fatale.”

We will be introduced to Selina Kyle in The Batman, but Paul Dano's Riddler will be the film's main villain. The story follows Bruce Wayne about two years into his career fighting crime in Gotham City, as director Matt Reeves didn't want to delve into Bruce's origin story once again. Because Bruce is still a rookie vigilante, he's still figuring things out as the savior of Gotham City, and the Riddler proves to be his toughest challenge yet. It will be interesting to see how Selina figures into all of this as well.

Batman will also need to watch out for the Penguin, as Colin Farrell also stars in the movie as Oswald Cobblepot. The actor has explained how Oswald's role in The Batman is limited, but he was looking forward to expanding upon the character's story. Farrell has signed on to lead a spinoff series at HBO Max as the Penguin, which is one of at least two spinoff shows that are being made in conjunction with The Batman. The other series will follow the officers working with the Gotham Police Department.

A recent synopsis for The Batman reads: "Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman (Robert Pattinson), striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies - Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis), Lt. James Gordon (Jeffrey Wright) - amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.

When a killer targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Selina Kyle/aka Catwoman (Kravitz), Oswald Cobblepot/aka the Penguin (Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro), and Edward Nashton/aka the Riddler (Dano). As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City."

The Batman will be released in theaters on March 4, 2022.
